Hiking in Barbados

$
0
0

At first thought, you might not put hiking and Barbados together, but since the island is relatively flat in comparison to other Caribbean islands, Barbados has become more known for eco friendly holidays, and in particular hiking vacations.Barbados hikingBarbados has a well subscribed hiking association which has been around since 1983, and offers weekly hikes all over the island. The hikes are FREE, and enthusiasts can choose from many different types and difficulty levels.

The Barbados Hiking Association hikes available are:

  • Morning hikes starting at 6:00 AM
  • Afternoon hikes starting at 3:30 PM
  • Moonlight hikes starting at 5:30 PM

There are generally four difficulty levels offered:

  • Grade 1: Stop ‘n Stare (6 mile hike)
  • Grade 2: Medium (6 plus mile hike)
  • Grade 3: Brisk medium (9 plus mile hike)
  • Grade 4: Grin ‘n Bear (12 plus mile hike)

Barbados hiking

In addition to the Barbados Hiking Association, the Barbados National Trust also organizes free hikes and walks on Sundays, with a duration of about three hours. All of these hikes start at 6:00 AM, with three difficulty levels offered: ‘Stop ‘n Stare’ (12 miles)
, ‘Medium & Fast Medium’ (9 miles)
and ‘Grin ‘n Bear’ (12 miles).

Some of the hikes being offered in April by the Barbados National Trust include:

  • Barclays Park on the East coast
  • Brighton Farmers Market which is a moonlight hike
  • Gun Hill Signal Station in St. George, also a moonlight hike
  • Archers Bay in St. Lucy
  • Rock Hall in St. Lucy

Barbados hiking

Hikes with either of these groups offers participants a chance to take in the natural beauty of Barbados in a way that you can’t do when driving around the island.

Depending on the location, hikers will be taken through local villages, cane fields, plantations and cart roads, to “tropical forests” and gullies. Enthusiasts can also take part in hikes and walks that mirror the coast where the old train line from the 1800’s once ran.

Barbados hiking

A few things to keep in mind when you go on your next hike or walk:

Keep hydrated

  • One litre of water per person per hour of hiking is the rule of thumb.
  • Remember that there is NO substitute for actual water, so forget about taking sugary drinks.

Wear the right gear

  • Shoes are the first priority here! Invest in a good pair of hiking boots or walking shoes with a tread.
  • Wear a shoe that is about half a size over your regular foot size.
  • Hiking shoes should also have supportive souls.
  • Wear socks and take an extra pair so that your feet are kept dry.

Clothes

  • Loose fitting and layered clothing is key. Barbados is hot and humid, and visitors to the island who are not used to these conditions may well be overwhelmed.
  • Light coloured cotton fabrics are the most recommended for walks and hikes in Barbados.
  • And, of course a hat is a must!

Medication

  • Don’t forget to take any medication that you are currently administered, no matter how long or short your hike is, especially if you are asthmatic.

Sunblock and bug spray

  • No matter if it’s overcast, you can still get a major sunburn! SPF sunblock of 30 and over with both UVA and UVB protection is recommended by most doctors. This should give you about 97 percent protection.
  • Sunblock should be reapplied every four hours or so.
  • Also, make sure to spray with a bug repellant before and during your hike.

Barbados hiking

A few other handy items you may want to consider taking on your Barbados hike:

  • Toilet paper
  • Sunglasses
  • Binoculars
  • Snacks
  • Cell phone
  • Camera
  • Towel
  • Basic med kit (with plaster and antiseptic lotion)

Barbados hiking

You can contact The Barbados Hiking Association here or The Barbados National Trust here to book your next hike. Make sure to read the disclaimers carefully  on each website before starting off.

If you want to organize a private hike, Hike Barbados charges a fee depending on how long you want to go out for. Transport can be also be arranged for an additional cost of about $80.00 BBD. Contact Hike Barbados here for more information.

Prices for hikes are below (per hike NOT per person):

  • 2-mile hike is $300.00 BBD
  • 4-mile hike is $300.00 BBD
  • 6-mile hike is $400.00 BBD
  • 8-mile hike is $450.00 BBD
  • 10-mile hike is $500.00 BBD

Many thanks to The Barbados Hiking Association for the use of photos from their Facebook page.

St. Patrick’s Day in Barbados

I know you may think celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Barbados seems a bit bizarre, but as a former British colony, we do have strong ties to Ireland, with many Barbadians having ancestors from that region.

The celebration this year falls on a Sunday… meaning that most people in Barbados will be getting their green on at a local bar or pub! Our University of the West Indies students are known for getting together and showing their Irish friends a good time… as you can see below!

UWI students

The only island in the Caribbean that officially celebrates St. Patrick’s Day (as in get’s the day off as a bank holiday) is Montserrat, and they celebrate it for the whole week! :D

Montserrat

So if you are visiting the island OR living here, why not dress up and make a day of it, or simply grab a few cold ones at The Carib Beach Bar this weekend?

Dress your dog

Learn the St. Patrick’s Day Toast!

Here’s to a long life and a merry one
A quick death and an easy one
A pretty girl and an honest one
A cold beer — and another one!

Happy St.Patrick’s Day to you all!

The Changing of Sentry in Barbados

The Changing of Sentry in Barbados takes place every Wednesday at The Garrison Clock Tower, at 11:45 AM until 12 Noon. Admission is free, and if you are looking for a little bit of British History, this weekly held event shouldn’t be missed.

Here’s a bit of the history behind the changing of the Sentry:

When Britain declared war on the French back in 1793, there was a shortage of troops, and to make up the short fall, slaves were recruited. Two regiments made up of 1,000 men each were formed, and they were called ‘The West India Regiments”.

As incentive to enlist, each slave was given their freedom and paid as soldiers in the British army. These regiments served the British Army for 120 years.

The Changing of the Sentry has been around since December 14th 2011, when it was launched to celebrate Tourism week in Barbados.

Our Changing of Sentry in Barbados is similar to the Changing Of The Guard at Buckingham Palace – just on a smaller scale. Below are a few pictures of the ceremony supplied to us kindly by Kaspar Coward. If you would like a preview to what it’s like, just click this link to view a short video on the Barbados National Trust’s website.

A different perspective

We all need a little perspective from time to time. Something that forces us back from chipping away at the coal faces of our daily lives. Well, this video is all about seeing the world differently from some folks who have actually experienced it first hand.

Earth gazing

Next time you’re enjoying sundowners, gazing at the sunset or marvelling at the clear azure waters on a sunny day, remember that this is merely a more localised form of Earth gazing. There are probably Astronauts on the International Space Station gazing at the planet with us, right now. Currently there is a particularly prolific chronicler of ICS Earth gazing called Commander Hadfield. Follow him for daily reminders about how beautiful and fragile our collective home is.

Spaceship Earth

You might ask what this has to do with real estate or Barbados in general? Well, I’ve always felt that given our small population and geographic size, we – of all nations – have one of the best opportunities to create a society completely in-tune with our environment and responsible for it. If you would like to get more involved in local environmental issues, a few options spring to mind like The Future Centre Trust and the Barbados Horticultural Society. Take this opportunity to start living responsibly yourselves and managing your own lives better, buy local produce at the markets, grow your own vegetables and recycle all non-bio waste at B’s Bottlin’.

Construction

The construction industry can be one of the worst offenders of environmentally unfriendly practices, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Check out what Eco Structure Barbados are up to. Eco Structure have built several green houses to date and have also helped many other local developers build more responsibly.

If you’re a Barbados company offering green solutions to everyday problems, tell us about it in the comments… We want to know!

St. Thomas, Barbados

$
0
0

Yes, indeed there IS a Parish in Barbados that doesn’t have an ocean lapping at its boundary! St. Thomas is one of two on the island, and is well known for it’s picturesque countryside beauty and rolling hills, as well as cool breezes.

Did you know that there were only six Parishes in Barbados back in 1629; Christ Church, St. James, St. Lucy, St. Michael, St. Peter and St. Thomas. It wasn’t until 1645 that the other five Parishes were formed.

St. Thomas has a lot to offer, and we thought we would showcase a few of the most interesting things to do and see in this Parish. We have included historic sites, as well as some fun places to visit for a cold drink or simple meal as well.

St. Thomas Parish Church

St. Thomas Parish Church was built in 1629, and has since been destroyed by hurricanes three times (1675, 1780 and 1831) and rebuilt. Of all the churches in Barbados this one has embraced the changing times and not only has an email address, but a Facebook page as well!

St. Thomas Church

Sharon Moravian Church

This beautiful and historic Moravian church is one of the last remaining 18th century buildings left in Barbados. It was constructed back in 1799 with the help of the slave congregation. While the original church was destroyed in 1831, it was rebuilt, and kept its authentic style.

Sharon-moravian-church

Harrison’s Cave

For those of you who aren’t aware, Harrison’s Cave was discovered back in 1795, and for nearly 200 years was forgotten about, until Ole Sorensen and Tony Mason “re-discovered” them. They were named after Thomas Harrison who owned the land on which the Cave’s were located. Harrison’s Cave was developed by the Government in 1974, and officially opened as a tourist attraction in 1981.

Harrisons-cave

Welchman Hall Gully

The only real “tropical forest” Barbados has is the Welchman Hall Gully. This piece of Barbados real estate was purchased by the Barbados National Trust back in 1992, to emphasize the importance of the local environment and to preserve it for future generations. The Gully is a great place to explore and to have a look back at what Barbados must have looked like to the early settlers.

Welchman-hall-gully

Fisherpond Great House

Fisherpond Plantation as it was known, has changed hands so many times since the 16th or 17th century that it’s hard to keep up! At the moment, the property is owned by John & Rain Chandler and is THE GO TO PLACE for an authentic plantation style Sunday lunch. The house has been kept in amazing shape, and you can easily spend hours in the gardens taking pictures, and walking around the stunning property. Fisher Pond Great House has been visited for lunch not only by the British Prime Minister, but also the Queen of England.

Fisherpond-great-house

Bagatelle Great House

This Historic house in St. Thomas was originally built in 1645 and was previously known as “Parnham Park House”. The property has changed hands several times over the years and is now home to Chatters Tea Room, and other eateries.

Bagatelle-great-house

Lion Castle Polo Field

Lion Castel Polo Field is a relatively new, world-class field spread over twenty acres. This polo field is part of a sixty-four acre Barbados development built by Kent Cole. International tournaments are played here between November and May, depending on the weather conditions.

Most of the people reading this blog wouldn’t have been around for the historic hurricane of 1955 in Barbados, but I am positive that EVERYONE has heard of Hurricane Janet! This September 22nd will be 58 years since this catastrophic hurricane hit our little island.

Hurricane Janet was only a tropical wave located just off of Barbados up until September 21st, when within a 12 hour space of time it strengthened suddenly to a category 1, then a category 2 hurricane, and then hit the island as a category 3 with winds of 120 mph!

Janet went on to become the most powerful hurricane of the 1955 season, reaching a category 5 storm with winds of 175 mph, killing 38 people in Barbados alone, and nearly 700 people overall.

In fact, Hurricane Janet caused the loss of the only hurricane hunter plane in history. On September 26th the pilot lost radio contact at 10:15 PM, before flying into the storm. By 11 PM, the US Navy classified the plane as overdue and the crew was officially missing. Neither the remains of the plane or any sign of the crew has ever been found.

The damage was stunning, with the bill to repair the destruction in Barbados only, being BBD $5 million! It was reported that as many as 2,000 Bajans were left homeless afterwards.

Newspaper articles

Some families were reported to have stayed in shelters for as many as 10 weeks, for fear of returning to their homes. Government eventually had to ask them to vacate so that children could start going back to school.

With hurricane season soon here, we thought it fitting not only to show how destructive hurricanes can be, but to also remember all those who lost their lives in this tragedy.

The images below were sourced from the The National Archives UK, and show a glimpse of what the scene was like on our tiny island after Hurricane Janet passed.

Crane Beach

The Barbados beach with the most international renown is Crane Beach, and for good reason. A crescent moon of pink-tinged powdered-sugar sand, hugged by dramatic cliffs, flanked by a coconut grove and pounded by that quintessential Caribbean turquoise surf, this is the stuff that stunning photo-ops are made of. It’s not hard to see why it was voted “one of the Ten Best Beaches in the World” by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

Thankfully, you don’t have to be rich or famous to enjoy a day at this luxurious Barbados beach. Just past the hotel gates is a public access path where you can park and make your way to the sand via a bit of a rock scramble and stepping stones – definitely doable, but a little awkward if you’re carrying floppy lounge chairs or a heavy picnic basket. You can always rent a chair and umbrella from the vendors on the beach (about $10 to 15 BBD per piece depending on the season).

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at The Crane Resort or if you splurge for a day pass ($25 BBD per person, redeemable at the bars and restaurants), you can park at the resort, gawk at the cliff-top views and then be dramatically transported to the beach by a glass elevator. How’s that for wow factor? (Insiders tip: If you just want easy access to the beach, just tell the guard at the resort’s entrance you’re going for lunch, park and make your way down to the beach) :)

It’s not hard to get your money’s worth with that day pass, as there are a few options to grab a bite or beverage while you’re there. Right on the beach is The Grove Bar & Grill where you can order burgers, salads and assorted cocktails served right to your chair/umbrella spot. If you want a break from the sand, take the glass elevator back up to the hotel and have a sit-down lunch at the poolside Carriage House, which offers some reasonably priced meals considering that side order of view you get with it. Fancier fare requiring a reservation and dress-code can be indulged in at the Crane’s signature restaurant L’Azure, set on a grand terrace with a panoramic view of the beach. Their Sunday brunch buffet complete with Caribbean gospel choir is one of the “things to do” while in Barbados – but it’s not for the budget conscious. Those of us in that realm can make do with an ice cream or drink in The Village, a charming heritage streetscape of shops and restaurants within the resort.

A stone’s throw across the street from the hotel is Cutter’s, a gem of a deli cafe serving breakfast, lunch and all the fixings for a casual to gourmet picnic, not to mention some of the best rum punch you’ll find on island. Great for a pre- or post-beach pit stop, or they’ll actually come onto the sand and take orders for chair-side delivery.

While waxing poetic about the Crane beach, a bit of caution is required. The waves tend to be powerful and there can be an undertow. It’s an experienced body surfer and boogie boarder’s paradise, but a little rough for young children, unsteady seniors and the less agile. Obey the red and yellow safety flags and take care. While it’s fun to watch the adventurous daredevils cliff-jumping from the rocky precipice on the right, it’s not recommended.

What is recommended is a stroll to the far end of the cove, across the stepping stones and over the rocks to the neighbouring beach. If you time the tides right, you’ll be treated to a gorgeous stretch of sand and surf that you may have all to yourself – a nice respite from the Crane which can get a bit crowded due to its popularity with locals and tourists alike.

Sandy Lane Beach

The opulent five star Sandy Lane Hotel in St. James is the exclusive domain of its privileged, pedigreed and paparazzied guests, but the public beach out front is free for anyone to enjoy. Even us mere mortals could conceivably rub shoulders with or at least catch a glimpse of some royal, celebrity or VIP taking an ocean dip or sunbathing on a signature pink lounger cooled by an Evian mister (yes, really). But don’t just come here for the potential star gazing as the beach itself is enough of a draw.

Sadly, security won’t just let you cut through the hotel lobby to stroll onto the sand. For that honour you’ll need an advanced reservation at one of their restaurants, but be forewarned, even the informal beachside dining spot will set you back a pretty penny. The best way to access this beach is through a path to the south of the hotel right beside One Sandy Lane, a Palladian-style property so large and imposing you can’t miss it. You can usually find parking on the side of the road. This edifice is on the neighbouring beach of Paynes Bay, but if you walk about 5 minutes around the corner to the right you will be on Sandy Lane Beach – the pink umbrellas will give it away. Note, during high tide it can be challenging to get around the point so time your trip well or prepare to get wet.

The turquoise waters around here are relatively calm and inviting. Gentle waves with little undertow make it ideal for swimming and one of the safer choices for families with children. Jet skis and watercraft can easily be flagged down if you’re looking for some aqua action, but you won’t be inundated with pesky offers. The arc of sand is fringed with shady palms, mahogany and manchineel trees (stay clear of the small apple-like fruit as the sap can deliver a nasty sting). A few posh villas and stately homes line the beach on either side of the hotel but most are well hidden with landscaping to shield them from beach walkers/gawkers.

Nearby Holetown has quite a few places to grab a quick meal or pick up picnic fixings to go. At the swanky Limegrove complex try Lemongrass for top-notch Thai take-out, Relish for a deluxe sandwich or Zoola Cafe for coffee and a light bite. Posh Nosh in the the small complex beside Super Centre has assorted salads, rotis and nibbles to assemble a gourmet spread, or the Super Centre itself has a full range of grocery items. Carizma in the centre of the Chattle House Village is good for breakfast, lunch and occasional tapas in the evening.

Sandy Lane Beach is a nesting site for Hawksbill turtles during the July to October nesting season, and it’s not uncommon to see one while swimming or snorkeling in the sheltered bay. Of course, there are no guarantees you’ll spot a turtle or a celebrity, but it’s worth a try.
